Kurz zusammengefasst

The Scientific Officer role supports the Protein Expression and Purification Core Facility at EMBL, delivering high‑quality protein production services. The position works with internal and external users to design and execute protein expression projects across bacterial, insect and mammalian systems, and to manage purification workflows using chromatography platforms. Day‑to‑day duties include coordinating projects from initial discussion through to reporting, selecting appropriate expression constructs and systems, and delivering purified proteins to users. The officer will develop and optimise high‑throughput expression and purification pipelines, maintain chromatography instruments such as ÄKTA or NGC systems, and provide technical support to keep the facility running smoothly. In addition, the role involves training users, visitors and new team members, contributing to practical courses and workshops, and ensuring all work complies with laboratory safety standards. The essential qualifications are an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline, or an equivalent mix of education and experience. Candidates must have hands‑on experience with recombinant protein expression in E. coli, insect cells and mammalian cells at various scales, and a strong grasp of protein chromatography techniques, including affinity, ion‑exchange and size‑exclusion methods. Proficiency in operating, troubleshooting and maintaining advanced chromatography platforms (ÄKTA, NGC or comparable) is required, as are strong organisational abilities, communication skills in English, and a service‑oriented approach. Desirable additional expertise includes familiarity with diverse cloning methods, experience with cell‑free expression systems, and knowledge of laboratory automation or liquid‑handling equipment for high‑throughput screening. The contract is for three years, renewable up to nine years, with a Grade 5 salary starting at €4,147.92 net per month plus EMBL benefits. EMBL offers a flexible, inclusive culture, extensive benefits such as tax‑free salary, family allowances, private medical cover, generous leave, relocation support, and visa exemptions for international hires. The campus provides a library, cafeteria, sports and social clubs, and family‑friendly services in Heidelberg. What the role asks for: - Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in molecular biology or related field - Hands‑on recombinant protein expression in E. coli, insect and mammalian cells - Strong knowledge of affinity, ion‑exchange and size‑exclusion chromatography - Advanced use and maintenance of ÄKTA, NGC or comparable systems - Excellent organisational and project‑coordination skills - Fluency in English with strong communication abilities - Good working knowledge of cloning methods (nice‑to‑have) - Experience with cell‑free expression systems (nice‑to‑have)
