Kurz zusammengefasst

The Programme Director role will steer SPARKHub, an international Sustainable Practice and Research Knowledge Hub that will launch an open‑access platform in November 2026. Hosted by EMBO in Heidelberg from 2027, SPARKHub aims to help researchers and organisations lower the environmental impact of their work through a catalogue of measures, guidance, training, calculators, peer learning and certification. Day‑to‑day, the Director will lead the scientific operation and further development of the platform, set work plans, and manage a small agile team. Responsibilities include overseeing website content such as certification criteria, guidance, training materials and calculators; establishing and chairing an expert content review board; representing SPARKHub internationally with researchers, funders, societies and policy stakeholders; and translating emerging scientific developments and policies into programme priorities. The role also involves preparing Oversight Board meetings, producing programme reports, improving certification and peer‑review processes, managing external suppliers and developers, and coordinating with EMBO's administration, finance and communications teams to ensure compliance and efficiency. The position requires a PhD in the life sciences or a related discipline and a solid grasp of the research sustainability landscape, including practical barriers and opportunities for labs and institutions. Candidates must have proven experience in project planning and implementation, preferably within an international scientific or science‑policy setting, and a track record of working with diverse research stakeholders. Experience drafting guidance, policy papers and reports for scientific and policy audiences is essential, as are excellent organisational abilities, attention to detail, sound judgement and the capacity to juggle multiple priorities. Strong written and spoken English skills are required, together with a collaborative leadership style that builds trust across interdisciplinary, international communities. Desirable attributes include demonstrated expertise in sustainable research practices, especially in life‑science laboratories, publications in the field, and experience creating training materials, community resources or scientific standards. Experience managing suppliers or grant‑funded programmes and additional European language skills are also valued. The role may involve occasional travel and work outside normal hours, such as evenings or weekends. The contract is for three years, with a Grade 7 salary (starting at €5 408,54 net per month) plus generous benefits and allowances, and is based at EMBO's campus in Heidelberg, a vibrant university city with excellent transport links and abundant outdoor recreation. What the role asks for: - PhD in life sciences or related field - Proven project planning and implementation experience - Experience working with multiple research stakeholders - Experience drafting guidance, policy papers and reports - Excellent written and oral English communication skills - Collaborative leadership style in international settings - Demonstrated expertise in sustainable research practices (nice‑to‑have) - Additional European language skills (nice‑to‑have)
