The company is seeking a Senior Lead AC Protection System Engineer to join its HVDC Control Protection team, reporting to the LV Control Automation Engineering Manager. The role sits within a global Engineering HVDC Centre of Excellence based in Stafford and focuses on the requirement, design, integration, installation and commissioning of high‑voltage direct current (HVDC) protection systems. The day‑to‑day work involves capturing and analysing customer requirements, defining protection strategies and detailed designs for HVDC substations, and performing power‑flow, short‑circuit, protection and instrumentation studies. The engineer will create and review single‑line diagrams and schematics, produce calculation notes, and develop test specifications, detailed test plans and procedures. They will lead or supervise test execution, including Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and coordinate with project managers, technical experts and site teams to ensure successful delivery. Additional duties include interfacing with equipment suppliers, monitoring cabinet manufacturing, investigating technical problems, preparing responses to customer comments, and participating in technical meetings with customers, contractors or consultants. All activities must follow departmental design practices, engineering reviews and continuous‑improvement processes. Candidates must hold a degree in electronics, electrical engineering or a related discipline and possess solid knowledge of electrical systems engineering. Proven experience in protection development for HVDC‑related fields such as oil & gas, substations, transmission or distribution is required, together with hands‑on work with intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). Familiarity with protection design standards (IEC, IEEE) and strong competence in power‑systems analysis tools, MathCAD, Matlab, DigSilent PowerFactory, PowerFlow or equivalents, is essential. A good grasp of control and automation principles, as well as strong technical documentation, communication, influencing, accountability and decision‑making skills, are also needed. The role expects about 10 % travel and fluency in English; German language ability is preferred but not mandatory. The position offers a dynamic, international environment with flexible work agreements, a 35‑hour work week, 30 days of annual leave and competitive benefits. While relocation assistance is not provided, the role provides significant development opportunities within a globally recognised engineering centre. What the role asks for: - Degree in electronics/electrical engineering or related field - Solid knowledge of electrical systems engineering - Strong experience in protection development for HVDC‑related applications - Hands‑on experience with intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) - Knowledge of IEC and IEEE protection design standards - Proficiency with power‑systems analysis tools (MathCAD, Matlab, DigSilent, PowerFlow) - Understanding of control and automation principles - Excellent technical documentation and communication skills - Influencing, accountability and decision‑making abilities - Availability to travel approximately 10 % of the time - English language proficiency (required) - German language proficiency (preferred)
