Deliveroo, now part of DoorDash, operates a global three‑sided marketplace that connects millions of customers, riders and partners. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Event Streaming Systems team within the Storage organisation, you will help build and run the event‑streaming platform that underpins critical workflows for Deliveroo, DoorDash and Wolt. The role is hybrid, allowing you to work both from the office and remotely while collaborating with engineering, SRE, data and core infrastructure groups across the US and EU. On a daily basis you will design, develop and maintain large‑scale streaming infrastructure such as Kafka and the internal EventBus abstraction. Your work will focus on improving reliability, scalability, observability and automation, as well as debugging complex distributed‑system issues like performance bottlenecks and capacity constraints. You will also create self‑healing automation, contribute to incident response and operational readiness, and help define the long‑term architecture of the platform. The position requires solid hands‑on experience building or operating production‑grade distributed systems and a proven track record with Kafka or comparable event‑streaming technologies. You must be comfortable writing production‑ready code in Java, Go or Python, and have experience managing scalable infrastructure, including troubleshooting and reliability improvements. A strong grasp of infrastructure automation, observability, capacity planning and operational excellence is essential, together with good fundamentals in Linux, networking and JVM‑based environments. Effective collaboration and communication across multiple engineering teams are also required. Nice‑to‑have experience includes contributing to Kafka or other open‑source distributed projects, familiarity with Redpanda, WarpStream, AutoMQ, Pulsar or similar platforms, and expertise in JVM or broker tuning, partition management or Cruise Control. Experience with tiered storage, disk‑less streaming architectures, multi‑region event streaming, or operating Tier‑0 infrastructure at very large scale would be advantageous.
